A Conference to  Celebrate the
200th Anniversary
Of  the
1st Professional Child & Youth Counsellors

May 23-25, 2001  --  London, Ontario
University of Western Ontario

Two-hundred years ago, on January 1, 1801, Jean Itard and Mme. Guerin began working with Victor, known as "The Wild Boy of Aveyron" -- the beginnings of professional child and youth work.  Their work was innovative, emphasized teaching in the natural environment, and was with a boy who was or has been diagnosed variously as developmentally handicapped, autistic, learning disabled, deaf, and/or socially deprived.

To celebrate this 200th Anniversary, the OACYC held the 2001 Provincial Conference in London, Ontario -- a city known for its own history of professional child in youth work in Ontario.
Almost 400 CYCs were in attendance, including 5 members of the OACYC who were recognized for their history in the profession -- all had 25 years or more membership in the OACYC!
